What's more surprising, that Eminem came out for gay marriage, or that he did it in an interview with The New York Times?

The superstar rapper told the Paper of Record he's settled down, and while he doesn't exactly regret some of those lyrics that have made him rich, he's not the same guy these days.

"I think if two people love each other, then what the hell?" the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, said when asked if he now supports gay marriage. "I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want."

He hasn't always been so charitable toward gays, peppering best-selling songs with homophobic epithets. For that matter, his songwriting has also been misogynistic. He's sung about raping his own mother, who he called a "slut," and stabbing gays in the head.

"Anything I’ve ever said, I certainly was feeling at the time," he said. "But I think I’ve calmed down a bit. My overall look on things is a lot more mature than it used to be."

The interview came as Mathers, now 37, promotes a new album, "Recovery."  Mathers said he has been clean for two years, after abusing pills such as Vicodin, Valium and Ambien. In addition to feeling better, Mathers said losing his drug addiction has left him with more money.

"I save a lot of money by not buying drugs anymore," he said. "I invest. I always try to be smart. I try to treat all the money I’m making like it’s the last time I’m going to make it."

The divorced father of three girls said being a dad helps him keep sober. "I love them so much, and they’ve helped me through so many things," he said.
