Tomorrow: Save the Garment Center!

At 12:00 tomorrow supporters of the threatened Garment Center will be gathering at the needle and thread monument on 39th St. and 7th Avenue.  We expect to catch a glimpse of several fashion heavy weights there to support the cause.  Nanette Lepore is set to speak as well as CFDA executive director Steven Kolb and Simon Collins, the Dean of Fashion at The New School for Design.

The area has been experiencing controversy for some time now; relaxed zoning laws have begun to threaten the survival of the district's myriad showrooms, apparel suppliers and designer workspaces (these currently account for 78% of the leases in the area according to savethegarmentcenter.com).

We're hoping the message gets to the right people.  A slogan for the campaign reads: "New York Doesn't Need Another Soho or Meat Packing District."  We're thinking it's more likely that were the area developed it would be more like Herald Square and it's VERY clear the city is in absolutely no need of an expansion of that.

Save the Garment Center Rally is tomorrow, October 21st at 12:00pm, at 39th St. and 7th Avenue
