Granted, they're not exactly a "new" label—the brand was founded in 1987—but Scanlan & Theodore only just popped up on our style radar. The successful Australian brand operates nine separate boutiques throughout the country. Clearly, our next purchase ought to be a plane ticket to Melbourne, simmering hotbed of fashion that it is.
Their latest collection for Spring/Summer 10 (those lucky Aussies are only just warming up to the summer season) combines modern silhouettes with unusual colors and fabric treatments. We were reminded a bit of forward-thinking brands like Zero + Maria Cornejo or A Detacher, whose use of moody prints and experimental shapes always yield sophisticated results. A long-sleeve silk dress, for example, fades from deep rose to pearly-gray taupe with an eye-catching "brushstroke" effect, while a clean leather dress with bracelet sleeves boasts subtle--but impressive--design details, like perfectly pointed shoulders and an impossibly sculpted waist.
