Victoria Beckham: Elegant Draping in a 1913 Townhouse

When we trekked uptown to a preview of Victoria Beckham's dresses line for fall, we weren't sure what to expect. No one was more surprised than us when we ended up watching Posh herself guide is through the collection.

Beckham sat with the rest of the editors in a sumptuous drawing room, and narrated the entire collection, which she called "an excercise in control" -- trying to keep the structured shapes she's become known for, while also adding some softness in draping. The inspiration for the line, in fact, couldn't be more opposed: Dick Tracy and Martha Graham.

The collection shines in being remarkably cohesive -- Victoria Beckham is stretching her legs as a designer but remains very focused on the body. Running thoughout the looks were sexily exposed zippers -- from slim-fitted sheaths to the long, asymmetrical nude dress she announced she plans to wear to the Oscars. There was more color, as well, than in her previous collection -- deep jewel-tone blues and scarlet. The shoulders, overall, have softened, and she's embraced new fabrics like matte gazar and "gloss raffia," a slick-looking knit.

Of course, in classic Posh fashion, even her take on the sweatshirt dress is impossibly sophisticated and draped.
