Kim Ovitz: Hip to be Square

A packed and seriously star-studded house--including J. Crew's creative director, Jenna Lyons--came out to behold Kimberly Ovitz's spring 2011 collection, inspired by the simple square.

With her latest collection, the designer decided to take the geometric shape to the next level, having been inspired by the On the Square exhibit at Pace Wildenstein Gallery: "This exhibit was took 16 artists and how they use this elemental form to create order out of chaos, so I used that concept when designing the collection," she said.

The installation housing the presentation was a maze of mirrors and square frames, amongst which somber models engaged in staring contests with their onlookers. An entirely black and white palette let the experimental tailoring speak for itself: There were sheer jersey separates enhanced by unexpected tails and tucks, as well as orderly pleating and panels on body-conscious forms. Black-and-white stripes added another graphic element to the concept and on one occasion, as softened, draped tulip skirt was balanced by a sparely tailored oxford-style top -- all in one piece.
