Washington's First Fashion Caucus

The fashion industry has taken a step towards greater legislative support with the approval of the Congressional Apparel Manufacturing and Fashion Business Caucus.

Led by Democrats Jerrold Nadler and Carolyn B. Maloney from New York, and Diane E. Watson from California, the formation of the group is an important step towards bolstering the health of the industry, especially in measures protecting New York's Garment District, funding fashion-based school scholarships and focusing once again on the Design Piracy Prohibition Act.

The last initiative, safeguarding designers against copyright violations, has become a hot button issue within the design community, with more and more labels have been quicker to launch counterfeit allegations of late -- from Burberry accusing TJ Maxx and Marshalls to Coach suing Kmart -- in an effort to stem the tide.
