Designers Deck Barbie Out in Jewelry and Furs

As if Barbie wasn't getting enough attention from Christian Louboutin, the latest doll is getting dressed to the nines by some serious talents -- from Tory Burch to Alexis Bittar.

The newest doll in the Barbie pantheon is "Barbie Basics," who wears a basic little black dress that's meant to be accessorized via "accessories kits," that include all manner of jewelry, handbags, scarves, etc.

Because the fashion world can't seem to get enough of Barbie -- heck, Christian Louboutin's apparently her official godfather for months yet -- several CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) members have customized one of the new dolls with his or her own personal stamp: Justin Giunta of Subversive draped Barbie in piles and piles of luxe-looking jewelry; Tory Burch added a fur shawl and a sparkly, going-out clutch; Alexis Bittar created a asymmetrical, embellished dress with his signature minimalist necklace and cuff -- you get the idea.

12 designers in all have taken a stab at updating Barbie's wardrobe, including Philp Crangi, Isaac Mizrahi, Monica Botkier, and Devi Kroell -- some adding accessories, and others completely redesigning the little black dress. The special CFDA dolls will be auctioned off on eBay starting Thursday (with an opening bid of $100, according to WWD), with the net proceeds benefiting the CFDA's educational and scholarship initiatives. If you'd rather just customize your own doll, several iterations are available at Toys 'R' Us right now for just $21.99.
