The McConaughey Militia Is Coming To FX

When he isn’t starring in movies with Kate Hudson, walking around shirtless, or playing bongos naked, heartthrob Matthew McConaughey is actually turning himself into something of a little mini-mogul. Who’d have guessed he had ambition? Today Deadline reports the actor will help produce ”Kick Ass Militia,” a new FX comedy about brothers living in a compound. Here are the details:

…the single-camera comedy is based on source material by JR Reed, an old friend of McConaughey’s. It centers on two brothers whose divergent views are always pitting them against each other on their Malibu compound – one a survivalist and one a free-loving cult leader. Marc Hyman is writing the script and is executive producing Militia, now in development, with McConaughey.

FX is currently home to “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia,” “The League” and “Archer.” All of those shows have a few things in common. They’re all aggressively male comedies. They all deploy R-rated humor. And they’re all quite funny. So it’s safe to assume that McConaughey’s new show will also be gleefully crude and offensive. In the right hands, like on “Sunny,” this is good stuff. In the wrong hands, it can all go horribly wrong. It’s impossible to know what kind of producer McConaughey will be, or to know if he has a solid eye for comedic talent. He did play one of the great comedic roles of all time (Wooderson in “Dazed and Confused”) though, so that’s a nice feather in his cap.

Deadline also notes McConaughey is also developing comedies for Starz and Fox. Man, it’s almost like this guy WORKS. That is soooo not the Matthew McConaughey we all know and love.
