It kicks off tonight at Lincoln Center.
Tonight’s show is free; Japanther, Voxhaul Broadcast, The Pharmacy, Electric Tickle Machine, and the So So Glos are all on the bill. On Tuesday night (not free; tickets are $50) is when things get kicked into high Big Top gear: joining a lineup showcasing lo-fi icon Ariel Pink, Amazing Baby, Saint Motel and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with Aska is the Big Apple Circus, whose contortionists, jugglers and acrobats will do their thing while the bands perform. We can already picture the sea of iPhones being deployed to capture this heady, multisensory happening. (Early reports had Susan Sarandon presenting the night, but we haven’t been able to confirm that she’ll be on hand.)
On both nights, you’ll also be able to wander a veritable midway of food/drink/swag attractions from sponsors like Belvedere, Pop Chips, Impossible Projects (of Polaroid fame), Van Leeuwen’s Ice Cream Truck, Mexicue and Asia Dog, plus a pop-up beer bar (love that phrase) from Six Point Brewery.
The event’s a nod to The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, the 1968 musicfest/film organized by the Stones--and featuring performances from famous friends like John Lennon and Yoko Ono, The Who and Eric Clapton--under a replica big top with circus acts. (The film was withheld from distribution, reportedly because the Stones were unhappy with their performance; it was ultimately released in 1996.)
