Lineup Announced for River to River Fest

Just when we thought we couldn’t take one more second of this bitter industrial Northeastern rain, we’re reminded of one of the reasons summers here are so great: concert season is about to begin.

Beyond the slew of shows announced for Northside Festival, the Pool Parties, and the impending Celebrate Brooklyn (including curation by The Bowery Presents) today, the lineup of the massive 10th Annual River to River Festival was unveiled.

The festival opens with what appears to be a 12-hour marathon concert at the World Financial Center Winter Garden June 19. It’s presented by Bang On A Can, with the Bang On A Can All Stars and Philip Glass, performing the music of David Byrne/Annie Clark (of St. Vincent). That’s basically a good third of the current avant-garde on stage at once.

Of course, we zero in, across Manhattan, on the too-cool-for-school crowd at the Seaport.

This segment opens June 24 with the resting-on-laurels rock of Sean Lennon’s band, Ghost of the Sabertooth Tiger.

Our money’s on Jana Hunter’s great Lower Dens project July 1, the assaultive shoegaze of Weekend July 8 and The Radio Dept. throwing down a chilled set of beat-and-synth anthems July 15 with power-pop Polyvinyl stalwarts Asobi Seksu.

There’s also some more highfalutin stuff on the bill, including a production from Rufus Wainwright of his opera Prima Donna at the Winter Garden June 28.

Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park will host a plethora of weird, including the magnificent performance art-rock of Laurie Anderson, the tabla-piano fusion jazz of Vijay Iyer, and the legend that is Patti Smith, who can’t seem to NOT play these kinds of fundraisers these days.
