Lower East Side, Manhattan

The border of the Lower East Side and Chinatown neighborhoods was the site of many incidents targeting older Asian Americans, including an attack where a 54-year-old Asian woman was hit in the face with a metal pipe at Grand and Ludlow streets; and an incident where a 56-year-old Asian man was hit in a surprise attack and was continuously beaten after he fell to the ground.

Midtown, Manhattan

Times Square and the area surrounding it also saw a high concentration of AAPI hate incidents. Broadway and film dancer Alex Wong said that he had rocks thrown at him by a group of strangers while he was riding his bike through Midtown in early March 2021. Nearby, a 23-year-old student at a language school was punched by a woman that same month. The assailant allegedly said, "Where's your corona mask, you Asian -----."

Flushing, Queens

In Queens, most incidents are being reported in the Flushing neighborhood. A 52-year-old Asian American woman was attacked while waiting in line at a Flushing bakery when a man approached her and pushed her to the ground, causing her to hit her head. The month prior, a 25-year-old Asian woman was screamed at as she stood on a street. The man allegedly yelled, "This is not China, you're in America!" before attempting to hit her with a hanger.

Midwood, Brooklyn

Hate incidents were more common in the southern portion of Brooklyn - one of which was a string of physical AAPI hate attacks committed by the same perpetrator in Midwood, Sheepshead Bay, and Gravesend. In one incident, the man grabbed a 32-year-old Asian woman by her hair and the two could be seen struggling on surveillance video.

Chelsea, Manhattan

Chelsea also saw violent incidents against Asian Americans. A 40-year-old man exited his car only to be met by anti-Asian slurs and then choked and punched. In another notable incident in the area, an undercover Asian NYPD officer with the Hate Crimes Task Force was threatened with violence and told to "Go back to China before you end up in the (expletive) graveyard," according to police. The man allegedly threatened to slap and stab the undercover detective in the face.
