Hot Ticket: Nicole Atkins & the Black Sea

The self-dubbed purveyor of “pop-noir” plays a rare area gig at Bell House on August 6

In a music scene crawling with spare-sounding Feist wannabes, Nicole Atkins is that rare bird: A female singer-songwriter unafraid of high drama, good old-fashioned bombast, and big, catchy pop hooks.

She’s a little bit Dusty Springfield (especially on the breakout track “The Way It Is” from her debut disc “Neptune City”) and a little bit Roy Orbison, with just a soupçon of Stevie Nicks in her voice. (Check out her recent cover of the MJ chestnut “Ben.”) This Jersey girl hasn’t been in town much of late (blame a busy, all-over-the-place touring schedule), so it’s a treat to catch her at Brooklyn’s Bell House next week.
