Thousands Still Without Power After Winter Storm

Black ice and power issues are lingering after Wednesday's winter storm dumped freezing rain and snow on the region, coating roads and sidewalks with a slush that made travel treacherous amid a shortage of salt.

Nearly 5,000 customers were still without power throughout New Jersey, utilities said. Many were in Burlington and Mercer counties, where there was substantial tree and equipment damage.

At the height of the storm Wednesday, more than 65,000 lost power in New Jersey.

In New York City, Con Edison urged customers in Harlem to conserve electricity after melting snow and ice dripped into underground conduits, causing wires to fry. The utility is urging customers to avoid using washing machines, dishwashers and other energy-reliant appliances until the problem is fixed.

About 2 to 4 inches of snow fell in the city Wednesday morning before the ice moved in. That accumulation came after the 8 to 10 inches that fell in the area on Monday. Areas north and west of the city saw an additional 4 to 6 inches, with slightly higher amounts further north.

Skies are clear Thursday, and it is expected to be frosty but dry through Saturday with temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Sunday, more snow is forecast to hit the region.
