Nasty, Wind-Driven Soaker Pounds Tri-State on Last Day of March

An end-of-the-month storm has brought a nasty round of cold temperatures, rain and wind to start the weekend, Storm Team 4 says.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton and Albany issued winter weather and flood advisories in effect through Saturday morning, with the possibility of light accumulations of ice. Check the latest severe weather alerts for your area here.

Track the system with Storm Tracker 4, the tri-state's most powerful radar.

Cold rain that started Friday morning and continued throughout the day had mostly tapered off by 11 p.m., but whipping winds were expected into Saturday morning, making it feel more like the 20s than the 40s in the city overnight.

More than 2 inches of rain fell in parts of every borough of the city by late Friday, with Castle Hill in the Bronx and Howard Beach in Queens seeing nearly 3 inches of rain. More than 3 inches of rain was reported in Belmar on the Jersey Shore. Most other parts of the tri-state saw between an inch and 2 inches.

Flooding continued to be a threat along the coast, as well as by streams and poor drainage areas, and a flood watch is in effect for most of New Jersey. Rain had flooded a number of streets in New Jersey by late Friday, including in Green Brook and on a ramp of the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee.

"It's one of those nights you only travel 100 yards from your home," Joe Schurid, of Hoboken, said Friday night.

Rain and wind caused flight delays at area airports during the day and into the evening. At one point, LaGuardia, Newark and JFK were all experiencing inbound flight delays of more than 2 hours. At JFK, inbound delays were more than 5 hours.

The weekend looks mainly dry. Saturday may start with a few sprinkles, but it will be mostly windy and cool with cloudy skies and highs in upper 40s.

Sunday is the winner, with a high of 57 degrees and mostly sunny skies, Storm Team 4 says.
