The weather mucked up flights at both Newark and LaGuardia airports, which both advised passengers to check with carriers about flight delays because of the weather.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy issued a statement Sunday afternoon warning residents about possible flooding later in the evening, saying those who live in flood-prone areas should exercise caution when driving.
Flood watches were in effect for the entire region with the exception of New York City, Long Island and New Jersey's Hudson, Monmouth and Ocean counties.
Rainfall totals Saturday ranged from around 1 to 3 inches, causing localized street and river flooding throughout the area.
Police in Westchester County said flooding caused problems on a roughly eight-mile stretch of the Bronx River Parkway early Sunday morning. A section of the highway between the Sprain Brook Parkway in Bronxville and the county government center in White Plains was closed for a time, but was reopened by about 8 a.m.
New York City emergency management officials said flooding forced the closure of the westbound Belt Parkway at Farmers Boulevard in Queens for a time Sunday. The rain also caused extensive delays at the deluged Cross Island Parkway at the Throgs Neck Bridge in Queens.
On Long Island, some local roads in Suffolk County were still swamped with large puddles Sunday morning.
