Zac Posen for Less

You know times are really getting tough when Zac Posen, the cherub-like prince of couture detailing—from exquisite tailoring to layers upon layers of ruffles—is starting to work on a lower-priced line. According to Fashion Week Daily, the designer has been slowly building up a team to work on "a diffusion line" while planning out his upcoming fragrance with Fabien Baron. According to Posen: "We've been in the process of building our lower priced collections ... So we've been busy assembling our team for that starting with our fragrance." Well, if it's any consolation, he's joining the ranks of several other heavy-hitters who also realized America's market really lies in the middle (and be aware, we're still talking over $400 dresses, so by "middle" we really mean "hey, at least it's not over a grand"): Marc Jacobs launched Marc by Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen has the lower-priced McQ line, and Michael Kors has both MICHAEL Michael Kors and KORS Michael Kors. Given Posen's attention to detail (and his coziness with fashion magazine insiders), you can bet the new line is going to be pretty spectacularly publicized.
