Storecasting: A Banana Grows in Soho

A high-level Racked informant sent in this photo of the Banana Republic renovation currently taking place at 552 Broadway in Soho. The space used to house Banana's women's line, but in May the brand consolidated, moving everything into the smaller men's shop down the block. Now, 552's being turned into a bigger location that will carry merchandise for both genders. (As for the smaller spot, a salesperson tells us it should remain open.)

Our tipster included a progress report on the site, which he's calling the Bigger Banana. "The grand old clock is gone—and so are the walls and just about everything else inside. They've ripped out the ceiling and opened it up to the second floor (former long-time home of the Paul Taylor Dance Company). By expanding upwards one might think they've caught that nasty Top Shop virus or want to knock the socks off Uniqlo, their bigger neighbor to the south." We hate to say it, but we're not sure Uniqlo's exactly shaking in their cashmere.
