Fake Bodegas Are So Hot Right Now

The Target Bullseye Bodegas might be gone, but the James Cohan Gallery in Chelsea has another kind of faux convenience store: "Shanghart Supermarket," an exhibit that looks from the street like a bodega full of Chinese goods. As NewYorkology explains, "All the goods are for sale, and there’s even a clerk standing behind the register. But everything, even the beer cans in the fake fridge, are empty." In other words, replace "designed by John Derian" with "actually doesn't have anything in it" and it's the same concept, more or less. The point? To illustrate the hollowness of commerce. And also to mess with innocent passersby.
