Fairway Market Headed to UES

Grocery chain Fairway Market will break ground today on what will be a massive, 45-thousand square foot store on the Upper East Side.

The new location, at 240 East 86th Street, between Second and Third Avenues, is a redesign on a former Barnes & Noble.

The store is slated to open in early 2011 at the base of luxury apartment building the Ventura.

The new store is the latest in a string of planned openings for Fairway, whose owners said they plan to double the number of stores from six in the next several years. This will include opening locations in Stamford, Conn., next month and Douglaston, Queens in 2011.

Fairway is a family-owned store with two locations already open in Manhattan, both on the Upper West Side. Their flagship store,  at 74th and Broadway, opened 77 years ago and is considered an icon of New York markets.
