Ray of Hope for a Sad 1964 Queens Landmark?

The landmark 1964 New York State Pavilion in what is now Flushing Meadows Park designed by Philip Johnson has been slowly rotting for more than 30 years. It's a "landmark" in name only, not having any official landmark status. That may be about to change in a small way. The Daily News reports the city wants the iconic structure added to the National Register of Historic Places. This, in turn, would make it eligible for hundreds of thousands of dollars in rehab grants. Workers have recently removed ancient elevators from structure and are patching concrete. The Parks Department historic preservation director says "We're very positive about its future." The state's Historic Preservation office is "interested" in listing it and the Landmarks Commission says that it's reviewing the pavilion. Early this week, the city announced it's fixing the fountains around another icon in the park: the big, steel Unisphere.
