Pier 40, the 15-acre athletic (and more!) facility at the Hudson River and Houston Street, was back on the docket of the Hudson River Park Trust this week as a coalition of groups—including the parent-led Pier 40 Partnership—continued working toward winning conditional support for their redevelopment proposal. The plan must still go through over a year of negotiations and land review, but that's still a ways off, because the Hudson River Park Trust did not vote on the retooled proposal, nor did they indicate that they would at their next meeting. But who can blame them? Even though Vegas on the Hudson is dead, this is still a good show. The Villager reports on the array of suggestions and demands made by the public for the pier at the hearing:
Wind turbines and solar panels, a round-the-clock, drop-in center for gay and lesbian youth, a middle school, a “new Caffe Cino,” a spot for community-based boating, more stuff for seniors and assurance that vintage cars won’t be dinged by parking lifts were among the many requests — in some cases, more like demands — by community members at the first full public hearing on the new Pier 40 redevelopment proposal on Monday evening.
