New Plan for DUMBO Triangle Has Space for Artists, Public

The DUMBO Improvement District hopes that a new plan for the Pearl Street Triangle between Pearl Street and Anchorage Place will help drum up support for the city to revamp the area.

Eight designs were submitted to the organization by residents and architecture firms, but “The Tracks: Ride the Rails!” by the DUMBO-based Coburn Architecture firm caught the judges’ attention. It was selected because it was a more viable plan than the others, one of which had a subway stop that funneled down from the Manhattan Bridge, said Jane Kojima, communications director of the DUMBO Improvement District.

An amphitheater and space for artists to display their work is included in the winning design. Judges also liked the plan because the former industrial aesthetics of the neighborhood were used, said Kojima.

Ultimately, however, the city will decide how to best use the space. Three years ago the Improvement District transformed the area into a plaza, which hosts a farmers market on Sundays. Kojima said the space is currently a triangle of asphalt that is painted neon green, but that residents still take advantage of the area.
