East Village Church Takes a Time Out Before Building Up

The gorgeous and scary (it'll put the fear of God in you, that's for sure) Russian Orthodox Cathedral at 59 East 2nd Street in the East Village is slated to undergo some fairly significant changes. This has a lot of people quite unhappy, so much so that we've received an update from the Landmarks Preservation Commission on the proposed residential addition to the building. According to LPC spokesperson Elisabeth de Bourbon, the commission has reached a "standstill agreement" with the church. The church will not exercise any of its permits or do any work on the building while discussions about the buildings potential landmark designation—and the implications of that designation—continue between the LPC and the church's leaders.
