Brooklyn's Jail with Retail is (Maybe) Moving Forward

The city seems to be going ahead with its plan to double the size of the Brooklyn House of Detention and reopen it. The jail closed 2003 and, since then, has gained neighbors like The Smith and the Nu Hotel. In any case, the city has signed a $32.5 million deal to create a 1,469 inmate facility with retail on the ground floor at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Smith Street. Opponents are promising to fight it via a public review process and (big surprise) a lawsuit if there isn't one. Both a public review and/or lawsuit could tie up the project past the expiration date of the Bloomberg Administration, effectively killing the project. The overall expansion would clock in at $440 million, give or take. The project has spawned significant neighborhood opposition.
