After Five Years, Red Hook's 160 Imlay is Really in the Clear

The epic Battle of 160 Imlay Street in Red Hook has been going on so long that we think David Dinkins was mayor when it started. Well, not quite, but it's been one hell of a show and it's been five years. Now comes word from multiple sources that the legal barriers to converting the building to housing have been cleared. First, there's an email from developer Bruce Batkin himself:

I want to make sure you know that we have prevailed - finally and conclusively - in court, and the residential variance has been restored to 160 Imlay Street. The opposition - "Red Hook Gowanus Chamber of Commerce" - decided not to [and can no longer] appeal the decision. Obviously, we are gratified that justice has been served - albeit after almost five years of litigation. We are now evaluating all our options for the project.

The original plan for the $90 million redevelopment of the six-story, 1911 New York Dock Company building was 144 condos on the top four floors, but a reliable Red Hook source tells us that the future may be rental and says, "It's also rumoured that Southerby's will be moving a warehouse space into the building and that plans for the project leave open the possibility of the Durst-backed Marina for this part of the Atlantic Basin." Damn shame the real estate market just crashed into the ground at about 999 MPH, give or take.
