NOOK CLOSER: Anyone can, ah, enter themselves into the World Air Sex Championships—like Air Guitar, except instead of simulating stroking a guitar, your guitar isn’t what’s you’re trying to make weep. Know what, let’s let the organizers describe it: “Come up on stage and show everyone how you do it. Or how you wish you could do it. Or how you once had it done to you, and oh my god was that a bad idea and while it's embarrassing to show that act to a room of strangers, you know that you need to do it now in order to make sure that no one else falls down the same rabbit hole." Got that? Music Hall of Williamsburg, Saturday, 8PM.
AUF WIEDERSEHEN: Between last’s week’s pig party, repeat flapper jazz bashes and much more, it’s been a grand summer on Governor’s Island. Host a stein and send off the island until 2011 at Mean Red’s Oktoberfest. Yes, there’ll be beer (more than 50 artisanal brews, from as far away as the fatherland and as close as Sixpoint and Bluepoint), and there’ll be food (Sigmund Pretzels, the Red Hook Lobster Pound). There’ll even be a Root Beer Garden for the kiddies. 12PM.
FINAL FRONTIER: The American Museum of Natural History’s Rose Center for Earth and Space celebrates ten years with a daylong party on Sunday. Highlights: a capella performances about the universe called AstroCapella (!) and an interactive seminar from science god/Hayden Planetarium director Neil DeGrasse Tyson on whether there are other Earths out there like ours. See full schedule.
CUISINE REIGNS SUPREME: One of the hottest tickets this weekend is to Iron Chef America: Behind the Scenes at the TimesCenter. NYT food writer/Spoon Fed author Kim Severson gets indomitable Kitchen Stadium veterans Masaharu Morimoto, Bobby Flay, and Jose Garces to spill the beans (haw) about what really goes on as they turn up the heat. (As if this writing, the event is sold out, but tickets are going fast and furious on Craigslist.) Saturday, 12PM.
