Hipster Ambassador Yoko Devereaux Shuts Down

Less than a month after South Williamsburg boutique Yoko Devereaux filled Times reviewer Mike Albo with goodwill towards hipsters, the label is closing.

The brand itself has only gotten more exposure lately. In addition to the "Critical Shopping" piece, they've also recently launched a diffusion line at Urban Outfitters called Yoko D, and at least one more collab was in the works, but its parent company withdrew financing due to its own money troubles.

Owner Andy Saltzer, who founded Yoko almost 10 years ago, pointed out in an email blast that he had exactly two pieces of art in the store: Farah Fawcett's bikini poster and a close-up of Michael Jackson on the cover of Thriller. "I received the call about funding at the same time that the news broke that they had passed away," he writes. "It felt like a sign of closure."

Closure, in this case, means a giant liquidation sale. Starting today, you can find $5 t-shirts, $20 knits and cardigans and $40 outerwear on the store's website, and tomorrow it moves into the shop at 338 Broadway, where the store's fixtures and office equipment will also be up for grabs.
