The wily selectors behind the Flashing Lights party have really done it this time.
Each month, one-third of the crew behind Brooklyn’s The Rub parties, DJ Ayres, magazine editor turned Fool’s Gold label founder Nick Catchdubs, and bass aficionado (and birthday girl) Jubilee, combine their booty-quivering powers for one of the city’s reliably rowdy events. Turntable troublemakers like Flosstradamus, A-Trak, and Lauren Flax have all dropped by venues such as The Yard on the Gowanus and Mehanata in the LES for the trio’s epic shindigs.
This time, the merrymaking is going down at 88 Palace, a dim sum restaurant tucked away in a Chinatown mall. And this time, the bad kids are Toadally Krossed Out. Judging by their photo, Toadally Krossed Out is a DJ duo with an aversion to shirts and an affinity for amphibian masks.
Judging by their music, they’re into thumping club beats with relentless rhythms, wheezy alarms and gruffly melodic toad croaks (we're not playin'). The toads are down with hipster influencer Diplo’s Mad Decent label and after shaking rumps in L.A. and Austin, the pair is using this party to make their New York City debut.
Expect Ayres to come bearing hip-swiveling hip hop and funk, Catchdubs to drop rug-shearing club jams you've never heard but will soon love (he's championed artists like Kid Cudi and Wale early on) and Jubilee to go extra hard because it's her born day. Staten Island DJ and frequent Jubilee collaborator Udachi will also lend his panicky nu-rave to the fray. If this thing doesn't make you bust an ankle, lob some chairs, embarrass your family or at least come home and rankle some crotchity neighbors you're simply not alive.
