Smith Street is about to get a little bit drunker. Gowanus Yacht Club, the divey Carroll Gardens spring and summer institution opens its doors for the season tonight. Hitting the patio bar is a rite of passage for many Brooklynites, just as driving out to the Hamptons in hot cars along 495 is a rite for many of their more well-heeled Manhattan brethren.
Two weeks ago the GYC held its preopening set-up-shop party where those who came by to help set up the bar were treated to free beer. Now that that's out of the way the beer will no longer be free, but the grill will be fired up, the plastic cups of beer full and the packed party will go long into the night. At least you'll beat the traffic.
