Good Band Alert: The Sweet Divines

Sure, they’re all matchy dresses and coy winks – but this old-school girl group brings back serious soul tonight at Southpaw’s All-Night Brooklyn Soul Party

Who: The Sweet Divines (a.k.a. Ashley Vitha, Pamela Quinn, Jennie Wasserman and Heather Wolfe), a living, funkified embodiment of girl-group soul from the ’60s and ’70s (and a spinoff of another late, great soul outfit, the Dansettes). Barely a year old, the group's unstoppable vocals and tight musicianship have already landed them an appearance with Sharon Jones and her Dap-Kings – so you know the pedigree is solid.

Where they hail from: Brooklyn

What they sound like: Aretha Franklin, backup for James brown or later Ray Charles, the whole Stax catalog

Spin this: “Honeythistle,” “Don’t You Ever,” both on MySpace

Where to hear them live: They’ll headline tonight’s All-Night Brooklyn Soul Party at Southpaw (8PM; 125 Fifth Avenue at Sterling Place, Park Slope, Brooklyn; 718-230-0236), where you can also catch Memphis funk from the Bo-Keys (featuring Isaac Hayes’ “Theme from Shaft” guitarist Skip Pitts) and boogaloo from the City Champs.
