Finding Salinger, Whitman in New York Parks

Submissions sought for literary list in the works

Come forth, lovers of J.D. Salinger, Walt Whitman and Henry James, for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation seeks your aide.

The parks people, who have been building up the department's online history pages is now working on a list list of literary references to New York City parks.

Once complete, it will go online along with the existing pictures of old carousels, movies filmed in the parks and strange park visitors.

They’ve also built an online historic tour, covering everything from the city's first official park (Bowling Green Park, established on March 12, 1733,) to the 1875 construction of the Central park Zoo (in part, so they could move the bear out of the basement of the nearby Arsenal.)

The Parks Department hopes to add about two new pages each month through 2009, with more archive photos and thematic pages.
