It's unlikely that Gary Myers of the Daily News and Steve Serby of the Post are actually the same person but they were sharing the same brain on Tuesday morning. Each of them used their column to make the same request of the New York Giants: Go get Anquan Boldin to replace Plaxico Burress this offseason.
It's a great idea. Boldin's big, fast, strong and possesses more heart than Burress. He broke his face, literally, in the Cardinals loss to the Jets this season, and then rushed himself back into the lineup. His play didn't suffer a bit as a result, either, as Boldin was selected to start in the Pro Bowl.
That's not to say he doesn't come with some caveats. He feuded with the Cardinals during training camp because he was unhappy about his salary in relation to that of teammate Larry Fitzgerald. There was also the sideline argument with offensive coordinator Todd Haley, but a new contract and new team would probably put those difficulties into the rearview mirror. Compared to Burress, those incidents are spilled milk, anyway.
Now comes the hard part. Boldin isn't a free agent, he's got two years left on his deal, so it will have to be a trade to get him. The Cowboys gave up first, third and fifth round picks to get Roy Williams this season, which was almost certainly too much but still helps set the market for a receiver with Boldin's ability. The Giants would be pushing all of their chips into the center of the table in a trade for Boldin, something that goes against their organizational philosophy.
There's also a report out of Arizona that Fitzgerald is willing to restructure his contract to help keep Boldin on the team. All of which means that there are a lot of miles to go before any trade is going to happen, and that Boldin as a Giant is best filed in the wishful thinking category for now.
