Turkish Folk Legend Debuts in NYC

We spoke with legendary Turkish musician Erdal Erzincan before his U.S. debut as a soloist to a sold out crowd at The Graduate Center's Elebash Recital Hall. Playing a baglama, a long-necked lute from West Asia, Erzincan performed stunning improvisations on the folk music of the Alevi people, a mystical Sufi sect to which he belongs. The performance was part of the Live@365 world music series.The interview and translation were completed with the help of Ozan Aksoy.

An elderly woman was injured in a quick-moving fire Friday night that spread across two buildings on the Upper West Side, including one that houses a popular restaurant. The fire started on the third floor of 509 Amsterdam Ave., then got into a shaft and shot up through the fifth floor, then spread to the building next door, no. 511, FDNY Chief of Department James Leonard said.  With a firehouse around the corner, firefighters were able to get there in three minutes. At the height of the blaze, 170 firefighters were on the scene, Leonard said.  Cellphone video taken by a neighbor across the street showed flames engulfing an entire apartment on the upper floor and shooting straight through the roof. A death investigation was underway Friday night after a man was found dead inside of an iconic Hollywood magician's club. Employees at The Magic Castle discovered a male performer's body and reported the death around 7:24 p.m., according to Los Angeles police. The man who died was a magician who has been performing on and off at the club for the past few decades, according to police. The cause of his death was from an apparent suicide, Hernandez said.
