Man Gets 90 Days for Kicking Cat Like a Football

Cat has since been adopted, is doing "wonderfully"

A Chicago man who police saw take a running start before kicking a kitten 15 to 18 feet into the air, then raise his arms to signal a successful field goal, will be spending some time in jail — and won’t get the cat back.

Cook County Judge Tommy Brewer on Tuesday found Percy Love, of the 6500 block of South Maplewood Avenue, guilty of animal cruelty for the Jan. 23 boot of the small black cat, according to Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

The judge sentenced Love to 90 days in the Cook County Jail on the misdemeanor conviction and gave him credit for 37 days served, Simonton said. Love was held since his arrest on a $50,000 bond.

Officers cared for the male cat until Animal Care and Control workers took it for treatment at their facility on the Southwest Side.

"Despite the terrible abuse, the cat (whom the defendant called 'Nightmare') is doing quite well. He is a very friendly and affectionate cat," Animal Care and Control Director Cherie Travis said on her Facebook page.

On Wednesday, she added, “the cat, now named Avery, was adopted... and is doing wonderfully with his new family, which includes dogs and cats.”
