Labor Union Accused of Using Witchcraft

South African labor unions in spat over use of witchcraft in recruiting

A South Africa labor union has accused its rival union of using witchcraft to increase membership.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is at odds with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), Reuters reported.

NUM General Secretary Frans Baleni said he was taking "seriously" members' reports that AMCU was using sangromas (witch doctors) and muti (traditional medicines).

Sangomas are respected across South African society, according to Reuters.

AMCU officials denied any use of witchcraft.

"We uphold Christian principles, we don't use sangomas," General Secretary Jeff Mphahlehle told Reuters.
