Live Hand Grenade Found in Easter Egg Hunt

"It looked like an Easter egg, but it was a hand grenade," said the man who spotted it

A gaggle of British pre-school children happened upon something special during an Easter egg hunt — not a golden egg, but a World War II hand grenade.

After a three-year-old was spotted standing on the live grenade at the hunt in Holford, England, police were called, and a bomb squad was sent in to detonate it.

"We were beginning to count up the eggs at the end of the hunt, and I saw a boy of three standing on an object. It was brown and about 4 inches high. It looked like an Easter egg, but it was a hand grenade," Stuart Moffatt, the father of three children were participating, told the Daily Mail.

He said the oblivious three-year-old standing on it thought it was a rock.

After Moffatt pointed out the find to hunt organizers, they moved children off the section of lawn where the grenade was and contacted police.

Once the Explosive Ordnance Disposal bomb squad arrived, it cordoned off the area and "destroyed the object in a controlled explosion," according to a police spokesman, UPI reported.

"It was a bit of a shock," said another father of children hunting for eggs that day. "Apparently there used to be an American Army base in Holford during the Second World War. I think it has to be something to do with that."
