Man Tried to Buy Urine at Elementary School: Police

"Soliciting [urine] at an elementary school is a new one to me."

If you're trying to pass a drug test, this may not be the best approach.

Two misdemeanors were filed Wednesday against a Mira Costa High School graduate accused of trying to collect urine from boys in a Manhattan Beach elementary school restroom, apparently to use in drug screening tests.

Kevin Manuel Duron, 18, of Manhattan Beach, is charged with two counts of failure to register prior to entering school grounds on Feb. 5 and Feb. 8, according to the District Attorney's Office.

He is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Torrance Superior Court.

Duron allegedly approached two boys late last week and offered them several dollars if they would urinate in a cup for him, Manhattan Beach police Sgt. Brian Brown told the Daily Breeze.

"It appears he was trying to solicit urine from elementary school students," Brown told the Breeze. "Our working theory is he's trying to gather urine to pass drug tests."

Duron was arrested Monday, when he returned to Pacific Elementary School and was spotted in a hallway, the sergeant said. School officials detained him until police arrived.

"These days, nothing surprises me, but it was very unusual case," Brown told the LA Times. "Soliciting [urine] at an elementary school is a new one to me."

Detectives were already working to identify Duron from video surveillance footage from Friday, when the same man walked onto the Pacific Avenue campus and entered a boy's restroom, Brown said.

He approached a third-grade student in the restroom and asked the boy to urinate in a cup, said Carolyn Seaton, executive director of educational services for the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.

The boy said, "I'm not going to do that,' and later told his mother, who reported what happened to school officials, Seaton said.
