So Help Me God: Atheists Target Inauguration

Atheist attempt to cut God from inauguration

A California atheist who sued to remove religion from the past two presidential inaugurations and lost will try yet again before Barack Obama's swearing-in ceremony.

Michael Newdow, of Sacramento, Calif., said he and others will file suit Tuesday in a D.C. court in an attempt to remove all references to God and religion from the ceremony, according to the Washington Examiner.

Newdow said he wants to take the phrase "so help me God" out of the oath of office and cut the invocation prayer because any references to God or religion violate the Constitution.

"Equality is important to me," Newdow told The Examiner. "We should show equal respects for all of our citizens, regardless of their race, gender or religion."
