Future first lady Michelle Obama says the family will wait until after they move into the White House to get a dog.

WASHINGTON - Malia and Sasha Obama will have to wait at least two more months for that puppy their dad promised them.

On Election Night, President-elect Barack Obama revealed that he had promised his young daughters that they could get a dog once the race was over. But the pup won't become part of the first family until after they move into the White House in January.

Future first lady Michelle Obama said it's better to wait to get a dog after the family's transition. "The deal with the dog was that we would get the dog after we got settled. Because as responsible owners we - I don't think it would be good to get a dog in the midst of transition," she said during an interview with her husband on CBS' "60 Minutes."

"We cut that deal with the kids before... America knew about it. So they're, they're good with it."

The family wants a dog from a shelter, and they need one that will not trigger 10-year-old Malia's allergies. During his first press conference after winning the election, Obama drew more even attention to the family's pet plans by joking that most shelter dogs are mutts like him, referencing his mixed-race genealogy.

  • Carol Hamilton Tuesday, Nov 18 at 7:38 PM FLAG COMMENT We love our Yorkshire Terriers and don't think we would have anything else. And imagine that we just happen to have a 6 week old puppy that was born on Oct. 4th and would be happy to hold onto him for the Obama's until they are ready. And when they are in DC they can see him and bond with him as we live about 20 min away
  • alex smith Tuesday, Nov 18 at 12:24 PM FLAG COMMENT Allergies are not from hair. They are from dander. This is skin shed by the dog or any other animal. If you are allergic to cats , for instance you are allergic to the hairless cat the sphynx. If you are allergic to dogs you are allergic even to the hairless dogs. Someone should go to any allergist and check this out. If you are allergic you are allergic.
  • Dr.Phyllis Monday, Nov 17 at 3:32 PM FLAG COMMENT I've shared my home and life with 2 Bichon Frise's over the last 22 years. They are the most gentle, sweet natured, loyal, loving and friendly dogs I've ever had. Their non-shedding genetic quality makes them ideal pets for allergic people. They are completely devoted to the people who love them. They are wonderful with children.
  • Diva Ruth Monday, Nov 17 at 1:48 PM FLAG COMMENT I have a Peruvian Inca Orchid rescued dog who is hairless and is wonderful. I know a lady from Peru has offered one of her puppy's to the Obama family and I believe Malia and Sasha would love a dog like this. This breed is very loving, loyal and clean! The girls are welcome to meet my Chester first if they would like to see if they might like the hairless dog. Chester was rescued hours before being put down. I'm glad to h ... MORE >
  • Joan Monday, Nov 17 at 12:15 PM FLAG COMMENT I agree with Ron. Although we do not have a Bischon, my cousin does and Matty is great. She had small children when they got Matty and she's been great with them and with everyone. They seem to be very active dogs and with small children in the White House, I think it would be ideal. Se had an English Springer Spaniel, but sometimes she got aggressive, but also a very active dog.
