There should be no shortage of must-see action on Day 2 of the 2016 Rio Olympics. From the U.S. women's gymnastics team's first step to the finals to key matchups on the basketball court and a world-record swimmer's quest for gold, there will be plenty to please your inner competitive nature.

1. U.S. Women Gymnasts Soar to Top of Leaderboard

[NATL-BAY] Meet the 2016 U.S. Women's Olympic Gymnastics Team

The U.S. women's gymnastics team breezed to the top of the leaderboard in Olympic preliminaries Sunday afternoon. Their total score of 185.238 was nearly 10 better than second-place China through four subdivisions, a massive gap in a sport where the margins are often measured in fractions.

Three-time world champion Simone Biles led the way. Her all-around total of 62.366 was more than two points clear of teammate Aly Raisman.

Defending all-around champion Gabby Douglas finished third but will not compete in the all-around final due to rules that stipulate a two-gymnast maximum per country.

The top eight nations advancing to the team final on Day 4, Aug. 9. The signature event for New Jersey's own Laurie Hernandez, who turned 16 just months before the Games, is the floor exercise, where her early ballet training and sassy attitude earn her high scores and big cheers.

2. Katie Ledecky Advances With Astounding Performance in 400m Freestyle

Katie Ledecky has advanced to the 400m freestyle final taking place Sunday evening. The 19-year-old with the tenacious stroke set a new Olympic record with 3:58.71.

She hopes to make a statement in Rio as she tries to become the second swimmer ever to win three individual freestyle titles at a single Games. Ledecky already picked up her first medal of the games, anchoring the women's 4x100 free relay to a silver-medal finish behind Australia on Saturday.

3. U.S. Women's Basketball Team Posts Record Win Over Senegal

The U.S. women's basketball team has won five straight gold medals at the Olympics. Sue Bird, Tina Charles and the rest of the players once again showed the team's skills on Sunday, defeating Senegal 121-56. The team broke its own record for most points scored in the Olympics with the big win during their first game in Rio. The previous record was 114, set in 1992 and tied at the London Olympics.

Born and raised in Syossett, Bird is one of the most decorated point guards in the history of women’s basketball. A three-time gold medalist prior to the Rio Games and the first overall pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft, Bird is expected to retire from international play after the 2016 Olympics. Her teammate Charles, a New York Liberty star, has been recognized as one of the best players at every stage of her career and was the first draft pick of the 2010 WNBA Draft.

4. Men's Volleyball Pair Advances with Win over Tunisia

[NATL] Potential Breakout Stars of the 2016 Rio Olympics

On the first day of men's beach volleyball action, a U.S. team on the rise defeated Tunisia 2-0. After winning gold in 2008, Team USA was eliminated in the quarterfinals in 2012 before winning the World Cup in 2015. Team USA’s Phil Dalhausser comes into Rio after reuniting with his old playing partner Nick Lucena as they look to get over the hump that kept Dalhausser out of the quarterfinals in London.

In team volleyball, brothers Erik and Kawika Shoji and the young U.S. men's team lost its Olympic opener in straight sets to Canada on Sunday night.

The No. 5-ranked Americans watched as the hard-hitting and 12th-ranked Canadians celebrated at Maracanazinho arena in the first pool-play match for both countries.

Tied 23-23 in the third set, Canada held on after ending the second set on a 10-2 run.

Canada also beat the U.S. in a five-setter for the Champions Cup title in May 2015 at Detroit, before the Americans won on the way to last year's World Cup crown in Japan.
