USA Boxing Draws First-round Opponents, Newark Star Shakur Stevenson Gets a Bye

The eight Team USA boxers now have their official opponents for the opening rounds of boxing in Rio. The official tournament draw took place on Thursday morning at the Teatro Bradesco in Rio de Janeiro. All 13 weight divisions learned their road to the Olympic medal stand at the Olympic Games on Thursday, according to a press release from USA Boxing.

As previously reported, both Shakur Stevenson and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields both received byes based on their seeding in their respective divisions. As such, they will face the winners of the previous round, having moved to the next round automatically. Stevenson will compete on August 14 and Shields will compete on August 17.

Antonio Vargas, USA vs. Juliao Neto, FRA on August 13

Shakur Stevenson, USA vs. winner of Brazil and Algeria after first round bye on August 14

Carlos Balderas, USA vs. Berik Abdrahkhmanov, KAZ on August 6

Mikaela Mayer, USA vs. Jennifer Chieng, FSM on August 12

Gary Antuanne Russell, USA vs. Richardson Hitchins, HAI, on August 10

Charles Conwell, USA vs. Krishan Vikas, IND on August 8

Claressa Shields, USA vs. winner of TPE/RUS on August 17

The AIBA has released a full bracket for each of the men and women's weight classes, which can be found here. Matches begin on Saturday, August 6.
