Rex Ryan's Big Mouth Isn't Just for Talking

Coach consumes 7,000 calories a day

Whether the Jets win or lose on Sunday, the Jets have a future that's looking mighty bright. Mark Sanchez, Darrelle Revis and Shonn Greene have something to do with that, but Rex Ryan is the biggest reason for the unusual levels of optimism surrounding Gang Green these days.

He came in making bold predictions, kept making them all season and has backed up enough of them that it would be nearly impossible to find a Jets fan who wouldn't run headlong into a brick wall if Ryan told them that they'd make it through the other side. It feels good to have that kind of leader in town and it would be nice to have him around as long as possible.

That brings us to an article in Tuesday's Post devoted to Ryan's eating habits. According to the paper, Ryan, listed at 350 pounds, consumes up to 7,000 calories a day since ditching a diet he was on at the start of the season. That's a lot of fuel for the system and you wonder how long he can keep up that kind of routine before running into some kind of health problem that keeps him from remaining on the job.

That's the main concern here. We're not making fun of the man's size because we only care about it as it affects his health. We could care less if Ryan was fat or skinny or if he wore polka dot jodhpurs and a monocle on the sideline. We just want him to be on the sideline leading the Jets for a long, long time and, frankly, we're a little worried about that after reading about his gustatory likes and dislikes.

Maybe he's just been saving up the big weight-loss push as a motivational tool. If that's the case, no better week than this one to break it out.
