Auburn's Cam Newton Declares for NFL Draft

Cam Newton accomplished almost everything one could want at the college level: he led his Auburn Tigers to a perfect 14-0 record and a BCS national title and won a slew of awards - including the Heisman Trophy - all in one year as a starter.

So, with nothing left to prove - and to get out from under the stain of a pay to play scandal - the dual-threat signal caller has declared his intention to forgo his remaining eligibility on The Plains and will enter himself into the NFL Draft, reports ESPN.

"This decision was difficult for me and my family," Newton said in an interview with the Associated Press. "It's been a blessing for me to be a part of something so great. Any time you win games it's a big deal, but for this school to win a BCS national championship, what a way to make people happy. Auburn is a special place that I can call home."

The 6-foot-6, 250 pound Newton beat teams with both his arms and legs this past season, throwing for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and registering another 20 touchdowns on the ground. He set school record for rushing, passing and total offense and set the Southeastern Conference record for rushing yards as a quarterback in a single season.

Newton likely projects as a first-round selection in the April draft and there are several teams in the top half of the first round - Carolina, Arizona, San Francisco, Tennessee, Minnesota and Miami - that are all in need of a solution at the quarterback position.
