Jones suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament making a stellar defensive play against Houston, leaping to make a throw from third base. Jones, who has spent his entire 17-season career with the Braves, faces a long rehab if he intends to return. And well before the injury, he had already hinted at retirement.
For the season, Jones is hitting .265 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI.
A career .306 hitter with 436 home runs, Jones takes pride in maintaining a high level of play. After a frustrating season in 200, Jones said he would consider leaving after this season, despite a contract that will pay him $14 million in 2011 and again in 2012.
"I'm on a year-to-year personal schedule," he said then. "Contract status is not going to dictate how long I play. The day I become mediocre on a regular basis, I'm probably going to ride off into the sunset."
