12 Things to Know About the Super Bowl XLVI

The Super Bowl typically is the most watched TV program in the U.S., with more than 110 million viewers tuning in last year. This year it will air at 6:30 p.m. EST Feb 5 on NBC. You probably know about the football part, but you may also want to share these facts as you gather with friends around chili and 6-foot-long subs, starting with the money: In 2011, the average 30-second spot sold for $3.1 million, according to Nielsen. In other words, less than a minute of game day commercials could pay Tom Brady's salary for a year. The top five Super Bowl ad categories in descending order are cars, beer, movies, soda and tortilla chips, with tortilla ads becoming a highly anticipated category thanks to Doritos' fan-created ads.
