Ras Baraka Sworn in as Newark's New Mayor

Former councilman Ras Baraka took the oath of office Tuesday during his swearing in ceremony as Newark's new mayor, succeeding Sen. Cory Booker.

Baraka is the son of the late poet, activist and author Amiri Baraka. He defeated former state deputy attorney general Shavar Jeffries at the polls in May.

Baraka replaces Luis Quintana, who served out Cory Booker's term after Booker won a U.S. Senate seat.

Former New Jersey Gov. Richard Codey administered the oath of office at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
