The White House is shifting its focus to gun control, trying to keep the momentum for stricter laws after the Connecticut school shooting. NBC's Tracie Potts reports.

The National Rifle Association spoke publicly on Friday for the first time since last week's elementary school massacre in Connecticut, calling for armed police officers in every American school because the nation's children have been left "utterly defenseless."

The American Federation of Teachers, which represents Sandy Hook Elementary School teachers, said the six will be posthumously awarded the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal on Friday during a White House ceremony.
 
The six to be honored include Rachel Davino, Dawn Hochsprung, Anne Marie Murphy, Lauren Rousseau, Mary Sherlach and Victoria Soto.
 
Four Newtown school representatives will be on hand for the event.
 
They include Tom Kuroski, president of the Newtown Federation of Teachers; Joanne Didonato, secretary to Hochsprung, Sandy Hook's principal; Kris Feda, a teacher credited with moving students and staff to the firehouse; and Rick Thorne, a Sandy Hook custodian credited with clearing hallways during the Dec. 14 shooting.
