A California police officer had a handgun in her bag was able to board a plane to Taiwan last week, with the Transportation Security Administration concluding that "standard procedures were not followed," NBC News reported.
"The police officer did in fact pass through the checkpoint with a firearm," the TSA said in a statement. The company added that it holds "its workforce appropriately accountable."
The 43-year-old officer departed Los Angeles International Airport and was detained and questioned after arriving in Taipei, according to Taiwan's aviation police.
TSA rules only allow passengers to transport guns unloaded in checked luggage. Screeners found a record number of guns at U.S. airports in 2016: 3,391 firearms.
