A man leaving a rooftop party in Manhattan was seriously injured when a landing on the building's staircase collapsed early Sunday morning, causing him to fall through three flights of stairs and leaving dozens of others stranded on the roof.

Firefighters responded to the seven-story building on Second Avenue in the East Village at around 1:30 a.m. and were able to remove the injured man from the building on a stretcher. His injuries were not considered life-threatening and he was in stable condition, officials said.

About 30 to 40 people who were gathered on the building's roof for a party had to be brought down by firefighters using a tower ladder and the building's fire escape. No other injuries were reported.

Officials from the Department of Buildings inspected the staircase after repairs were made
and deemed it structurally sound. The city said that the Environmental Control Board had issued a violation to the property owner for failing to maintain the building.
