Bat Boy, 9, Dies After Being Struck by Player's Swing

A 9-year-old bat boy has died after being hit in the head during a National Baseball Congress World Series game.

His team, the Liberal Bee Jays, announced his death in a message posted to its Facebook page Sunday night.

"With the permission of the family, and with much sorrow and a very broken heart, I regretfully inform everyone that Kaiser Carlile passed away earlier this evening," the message said. "Please keep his family and our team in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you all for the support during this ordeal!"

The deadly injury happened Saturday during a game between amateur baseball team the Liberal Bee Jays and the San Diego Waves, NBC News reported.

The Wichita Eagle reported that the boy, Kaiser Carlile, was struck by a follow-through swing near the on-deck circle on Saturday afternoon. A spokesman for the National Baseball Congress said the child was wearing a helmet, which is mandatory.

The boy was running to bring back a bat after an out when he was hit by a batter who was taking a practice swing, NBC News reported.

Home-plate umpire Mark Goldfeder, who is a longtime paramedic, treated the boy until an ambulance arrived. The boy was taken to a local hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.

"With heavy hearts, we send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to the Carlile family and Bee Jays organization," the National Baseball Congress World Series said in a statement on Facebook. "Sometimes life doesn’t make sense and this accident certainly is a memorable example."
